MASONRY WEEPHOLES

Masonry weepholes are required above flashing in masonry cavity wall construction. Weepholes should be located in the head joints immediately above the flashing, and spaced at 16" on center. The 16" on center spacing criteria is recommended for wick material.

Cotton or fibrous wick material is recommended since the material is conducive to providing a continuous conduit for removal of water to the exterior. Wick material should also be placed parallel to the masonry wall to provide a conduit to the head joint weeps.

If open head joints are used, a 24" on center spacing is permitted; however, open joints are not recommended because the small openings are easily obstructed by mortar droppings. Open joints also permit insects to enter the building envelope.
